The use of messaging apps in government business and its implications for open and accountable government in Australia
Accountability, transparency and openness are essential for good government. These democratic ‘must haves’ are enabled by good recordkeeping, strong access to information and privacy systems. Since around 2010, phone-based instant messaging apps have emerged as popular forms of communication. But while these apps facilitate instant and secure communication over vast distances, they present novel considerations for recordkeeping, FOI and privacy. This webinar will involve expert discussion of the Australian Information Commissioner’s March 2025 report on the use of messaging apps in Australian federal agencies in the context of open and accountable government and democracy in Australia.
